Summer's brief detour to Portland

Yesterday, the sun got lost and landed in Portland, so Bobby and I decided to hang out outside all day. We went to the Sellwood Riverfront Park, which looked like this:

Bobby needed to do some reading for school, so I brought a big stack of books with me. I ended up reading Patti Smith's latest book, Just Kids, which my mom got me for christmas. It's quite well written, which is refreshing because most books I read lately are awful.

Sellwood Riverfront Park turned out to be overrun with off-leash dogs, as well as their owners encouraging them to dive into the Willamette. These dogs then ran past us and got their gross river water on us, so we decided to find a different destination since neither of us is interested in contracting river hepatitis.

Fortunately there was a less crowded park over by our house, so that's where we ended up. I guess I moved my arm at an inopportune moment:

Later in the evening, Bobby and I met Conor, Jonathan, and their friend Brian at Produce Row for a little while before heading around the corner to Rotture. Bobby had a headache and didn't feel like dancing, so he went home. I stayed and had myself some fun on the two huge dance floors. I chatted with many interesting people (some of whom were nicer than others), and I wore much more sensible shoes this time around. I also got many compliments on my skirt, which was from my 2007 Heathers uniform. It was nice to break out the turquoise drag queen makeup I'd shelved after quitting derby, and I made myself look like an exaggerated glitter butterfly. Conor took a photo of me and Jonathan, and I may steal it (with his permission) if he posts it. I did have a minor casualty in the form of a lost rhinestone barrette. I knew better than to wear such flimsy hair jewelry, but I spent a little while scouring the dance floors looking for it. Bobby was kind enough to pick me up near the end of the night.

I woke up this morning with a minor sunburn and a majorly stiff neck. Too much dancing? Sleeping funny? Who knows. I'm having a lazy day to recover. Tonight we'll be barbecuing in the gloomy weather and trying to draw the sun back to us. If you're looking for my two most recent concert reviews, by the way, Ani DiFranco is here and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart is here.

  1. Almost like summer, at least in Portland. Glad the Patti Smith book proved worthwhile.

  2. Pretty sundress! We had two sunny days but it never got quite that warm. I'm trying to wear spring clothes anyway -- with a sweater. :)

  3. Thanks! It's from Old Navy, so it's also a cheap sun dress. Alas, Portland (like Vancouver, I imagine) is back to dreary and chilly weather for the foreseeable future. Boo hiss.
