I unearthed this gem while digging around for schmoopy wedding photos to post on my anniversary. It looks like we're being asked if we're sure about this. Yes indeedy.
Thanks to YouTube, I can pinpoint the exact moment I became sure about this. It was six years ago, almost to the day, and Bobby and I were standing in the jam-packed Crystal Ballroom waiting for what was likely Sleater-Kinney's last performance ever. Rumors had swirled as we queued for entry - Eddie Vedder had been spotted. He'd been close to the band members for years, and we aren't far from Seattle, so it was plausible. He and his ukulele turned out to be the opening act.
After playing a song or two, he was joined by Janet Weiss, who loves to cover little-known folk tunes. Somewhere in this crowd, I am fighting tears and clinging to Bobby's hand, watching my favorite band of so many years dissolve.
I'm not much of a believer in anything, but I believe in music and I believe in the occasional push from the universe. This push was an aggressive one, and it told me I was going to marry Bobby. I didn't say anything about it; this was 2006 and we hadn't been dating that long. I just held onto that little idea while the songs of my teenage years swept me away.
Two years after that last Sleater-Kinney show, on a date I chose for no other reason than it was the first Saturday following my championship bout, we crammed family and friends and favorite people onto the sweltering Ron Toms patio and made things official.
Four years in, I still think it was the best decision ever. Plus, I have legal claim to half his waffles and he owns the butt-halves of two cats. We did well.
Woop! Happy anniversary!
ReplyDeleteAin't nothin' like the real thing, bay-bee! Happy anniversary and many many more to come!

ReplyDeleteYou have two cats!!?!?!? Happy anniversary to them and their owners. Nice blog, Bratty. I am now a Sleater-Kinney fan as well.
ReplyDeleteThere is absolutely nothing better than having a happy child, one who knows what/who she wants and revels in those decisions. Yes, my nose is running and I started crying at the first word of this glorious tribute. Four years ago today, in sweltering Portland heat, I witnessed bliss. I still do. Happy Anniversary to both of you!!!!
