Birthday boy

Bobby and I had a long adventure around town last night. We tried (and failed) twice to obtain tickets to Robyn's show last night, which several friends were attending. I was later informed, repeatedly, that it was "the gayest dance party ever." Damn it. Way to make me feel worse about missing it!

Unable to get in, we settled for dinner at the Tin Shed on Alberta before coming back to Wonder Ballroom for a bit. From there, we decided to go see Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which was playing at the Laurelhurst. We stopped in at Beulahland to kill time before the movie started, and grabbed a slice of pizza at the theater. I was exhausted and fell asleep halfway through, but I'd seen it before.

Woke up early this morning to prepare for the party, and to hassle the birthday boy until he woke up so I could tell him happy birthday. I needed to go to Safeway and the pet store (we are perpetually out of cat food), and to craft my grand vision of a birthday cake. I decided on chocolate cake with whipped cream filling, buttercream frosting, and toffee sprinkled throughout. While the cake baked, Bobby opened his present, which was selected with the help of my PS3-owning friends. He was surprised, and set it up immediately.

I finished the cake with approximately five minutes to spare before Michelle and Brian showed up, followed by Serhat. I changed into my party clothes and came back downstairs to play hostess. Alas, the cake turned out a bit more Alice in Wonderland than I'd planned:

But it was well received anyway. Bobby said he'd even like a cake that was served in the rectangular pan used to bake it, but y'all know I'd never be so tacky.

We had a fine time, and I got Michelle to snap this photo of us before the house became overrun with guests.

Once the party died down again, Bobby and I watched Boardwalk Empire with the stragglers. His friend Barry stuck around for Walking Dead, which was my cue to head upstairs and blog about the party. I'm not into zombies. By now, the kitchen is mostly clean and the plastic cups and empty bottles have been disposed of. This week will be blissfully short, though punctuated with a jury duty stint on Tuesday. I'm hoping the forecasted snow for that day is sufficient to cancel that.

Also, this is overdue, but I have new hair courtesy of Tara. It's been getting all sorts of compliments, so I thought I'd share it with my faraway readers. The richness of the red has faded a bit since this picture was taken, but it still looks awfully good.

  1. I hope the cake was delicious and Bobby had a great birthday. Glad we both survived fake adult failure yesterday :)

  2. Sounds like a perfect birthday to me. Lots of love baked into that cake. Tara continues to be a genius colorist, but then, look at her subject. I recognize the scarf...nice.
